Ohio Gov't Mule Fans - Gov't Mule is performing two shows in the GREAT ROCK AND ROLL STATE OF OHIO. :-)

The first show is Saturday July 11th at the wonderful out door Fraze Pavilion @ Lincoln Park in Kettering, OH - Tickets are still available at $25.00 for reserved seating and $20.00 for GA lawn - the doors are at 7:00PM. ~ Tickets at the Fraze Box Office at - http://www.fraze.com/index.cfm

The second show is on Sunday July 12th at the beautiful Renaissance Theatre in Mansfield, OH (which is a little north of Columbus and a little south of Akron). Doors are at 6PM. I hear this place is like a mini Beacon theatre so the sound and views should be amazing. Pit seating is sold out, Reserved Orchestra seating is $32.50 and the Balcony seats are included in the Theater's 10 club special.

The 10 Club Special means on the day of the show Balcony tickets are $10. Now that's a deal. Tickets become available in person at the box office 2 hours prior to the show. There is a limit of 4 per person and cash is the only accepted payment method. These tickets have no ticketing fees, so it's a flat $10 and you're in the door! This Spring, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals started to work on their new CD at Village Recorder in West L.A. The cd will be produced by T Bone Burnett a Grammy winning producer, who has also produced Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Elvis Costello, Roy Orbison, the Counting Crows and the Wallflowers.The cd is tentatively slated for a Fall 2009 release and will highlight the newly configured and rockingly honed band, with Catherine Popper (Ryan Adams & the Cardinals, Hem) on the bass and Benny Yurco on rhythm guitar.

While the band has always rocked, now they are going to move to the stratosphere.

March is Allman Brothers' Month in New York City. This year the Allman Brothers Band celebrates 40 years as a creative, productive American rock and roll band with a three week, fifteen night run at the beautifully restored art deco Beacon Theatre located on Broadway & 74nd St. in Manhattan. Few bands have successfully weathered 40 years of the rock music scene as has America's first interracial jazz, blues and rock fusion ensemble, the Allman Brothers Band. Although the band has had many personnel changes through the years, Gregg Allman, Jaimoe (Jai Johanny Johanson) and Butch Trucks have moved the band forward through the highs and lows and tragedies and triumphs of rock and roll living, selling out the Beacon nearly every year since 1989. Starting on March 9th, this year the band plans to celebrate by featuring notable guests who have performed or who have yet to perform with the Allman Brothers, but who have all been deeply inspired by Duane Allman, a spiritual mentor and musical muse to countless rock and slide guitarists throughout the world over the past 40 years. Although the shows have been sold out for a while, check Ticketmaster for tickets that somehow find their way to availability in the days preceding each show. You can also check the box office on the evening of the event and if necessary, extras can often be found out front by fans whose friends had to bail on the night of the show.

If you live far from NYC and can't make the trip yet still want to see the shows each night, you can purchase a subscription to Moogis, a new business formed by Butch Trucks (see Glide Magazine for a recent interview) which will simultaneously broadcast each show as it happens and also provides an archive of Allman Brothers shows throughout the years.

As part of the 40th Anniversary celebrations, the Allman Brother's Wanee Festival Line-Up has been announced. This two day music extravaganza will take place in Live Oak, Florida, about 75 miles west of Jacksonville, where the Allman Brothers Band originated. Lastly, if you can't make any of these events but still want to learn about and celebrate the Allman Brothers Band and their indelible musical legacy, you can order a copy of Please Call Home: The Big House Years. The Big House was the Allman's home from 1970-1973 in Macon, Georgia and is a historical landmark in the evolution of American rock music. This video dvd documentary describes the band's history in Hi-Def, and captures all the joys, sorrows and magical times the band and their friends experienced when home at the Big House.

Allman member, Jaimoe and his contemporary jazz band, Jaimoe's Jasssz Band are scheduled for the midnight show at BB Kings Blues Club on Friday, March 13th. The Peacheaters, a Boston-based, excellent Allman's cover band that has developed a substantial following over the years, will be performing on Friday, March 20th, also at midnight at BB Kings. Devon Allman and his newly reconfigured power trio rock band Honeytribe will be performing a free concert on Friday, March 27th at BB Kings with doors at 11PM. On March 21st at 8 PM, Lucille's Grill, will host the righteous blues rock of the Lefty Collins Band for Allman freaks who weren't able to get a ticket to the Beacon and for other fans of great rock music.

In the Village at Sullivan Hall, Allman after parties include my most favorite new rock band Blues and Lasers, fronted by Scott Tournet, guitarist for Grace Potter's band the Nocturnals and includes Matt Burr, drummer from the same band. I saw Blues and Lasers in November 2008 and felt they capture all the right elements that make up a great modern day rock band that retains the dynamics of the blues from which they emerged. I look forward to their Saturday, March 21st, 11:30 PM show at Sullivan Hall. Earlier in the week on a night off Wednesday, March 18th, Allman Brother member Oteil Burbridge, will be debuting at Sullivan Hall with Go There an experimental, nu-jazz rock band fronted by founder Scott Sawyer. Yosi Piamenta's Heavenly Jams Band and special guests will also appear starting at 8:30 PM on the 18th. On Thursday, Mar 26th at 11:00 PM, Eric Krasno & Chapter 2 will be performing at the Allman Brothers after party also at Sullivan Hall.

In other venue's throughout the city: On Friday the 13th, the amazing Yonrico Scott Band will be performing at midnight at Joe's Pub, a wonderful venue. On Friday March 20th, The Allman/Tyler Band with Michael Allman and Tony Tyler will be performing at the National Underground, Shayni and Kevn's great downtown venue at midnight. On Wednesday, March 25 at 8 PM, on a day off from the Allman Brothers, Derek Trucks will be performing with his band in support of their new cd Already Free at the Wellmont Theatre in Montclair, NJ. And last, but certainly not least, Allman after show which will occur twice with Dumpstaphunk, at the Highline Ballroom on Chelsea's on West 16th St. in NYC. On Friday, March 20th and Friday, March 27th, Ivan Neville and his funky, rockin' band Dumpstaphunk will grace the stage and proceed to make you get up and dance. So rest up for Dumpstaphunk and all these great and wonderful rock shows in NYC this March.

While not strictly a musical event, the Hitting the Note Magazine is having a before party on Saturday, March 21st between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM at Columbus72 just a short distance from the Beacon Theatre. The party is very much a community affair with Jaimoe's Jasssz Band performing to help raise funds for a departed well-loved community member's family. As an aside from the Allman happenings and moving beyond New York City, Andy Hess, former member of Gov't Mule will hit six cities with Will Bernard, in support of Bernard's 2008 cd, Blue Plate Special. Will and Andy will be joined by keyboardist extraordinaire John Medeski and experimental drummer, Stanton Moore. This super group will start their tour on March 20th in San Francisco and end up in NYC on March 26th.
